The Clock Tower
There is one building in the High Street that is instantly recognisable and has stood for well over 300 years, and that is the Clock Tower. Originally built by Christopher Hey, a Mercer of Watton in the 17th century, its purpose was to house a clock and a bell. Sadly we do not know the detail of the original design as the building was extensively "modernised" in, or around, 1827 when the old clock was removed and the present mechanism fitted, and since that time the clock has chimed the hours to the people of Watton with the bell housed in the cupola on the roof of the tower.
By viewing the galleries below, you can see some images of the tower in previous years, the mechanism and also watch video of the clock striking and also see how it has been wound for the last 180 odd years (not by the same person though!).
